A complete guide to ski gear: the layering system, boots, helmet, goggles, gloves and sun protection, what to rent and what to buy, and what changes if you're going with kids.
The most common mistake is wearing one thick jacket instead of multiple layers. With layers you can adjust the heat based on what you're doing. Being active on the slope is different from standing still in a lift line, and that makes a real difference in how much you enjoy yourself.
With that sorted, the rest of the gear is individual pieces, but equally important. For the full packing list, see what to pack for a weekend in the snow.
Boots are the piece that can most ruin your day if they don't fit right, and they're surprisingly full of myths. The most common one: "more socks equals more heat." It's the opposite. Multiple socks or thick ones compress your foot inside the boot, reduce circulation, and end up making you colder, not warmer. One technical sock, thin and well-fitting, keeps you much warmer than two wool socks piled up.
Another thing people overlook: time of day matters. Feet swell slightly throughout the day, so if you put on boots first thing in the morning you'll notice more tightness than if you try them on in the afternoon. They haven't changed size—it's normal. Keep this in mind when deciding if they really pinch or if it's just natural swelling.
That said, there's a clear difference between normal discomfort and a real warning sign. Uniform pressure on your shin or instep is the boot doing its job. Sharp, localized pain in one specific spot, though, is something you shouldn't have to endure all day. Mention it to the rental shop as soon as possible—better before you hit the slopes than halfway through the morning. Before you go, read up on how to rent skis or a snowboard.
On most Spanish slopes, helmets aren't legally required, not even for minors on many of them. That said, in practice, almost everyone starting ski lessons wears one for one simple reason: it absorbs impact in a fall, whether it's your own or another skier who might accidentally collide with you.
When choosing one, two things matter much more than design:
Helmets with some kind of ventilation are really appreciated on sunny days, especially if you're planning to take lessons for several hours straight.
Snow reflects up to 80% of UV radiation, and that reflection increases with altitude. Skiing without proper eye protection on a sunny day can cause photokeratitis (what's known as "snow blindness"): irritation, a gritty feeling, tearing, and blurred vision. It's usually not serious and clears up in 24-48 hours, but it can ruin the rest of your trip.
First, make sure they're goggles or a mask certified by the European Union, category S4 (recommended for high altitude), and if you can choose, polycarbonate, which handles impacts better. After that, lens color depends on the light you'll have:
You don't need to buy several. If you're only going to ski a few days a year, photochromic or a mid-range lens (S2) handles most situations without having to swap goggles every hour.
As a general rule: rent technical gear (skis, boots, poles, helmet) unless you're going to ski many days a year. Renting lets you adapt each season to your real level, without carrying gear that becomes outdated in a couple of years. Technical clothing (thermal layers, mid-layers, gloves, goggles) is usually worth owning—you use it beyond skiing and poorly fitting rental clothes are much more uncomfortable to live with than skis or boots. If you're renting, you can book your equipment rental online at the resort of your choice. And if you're thinking about buying, here's how to choose your first skis or your first snowboard.
Dressing a child for the snow isn't "just a smaller version of adult gear." There are real differences worth knowing before you pack. If you're still unsure when to start, see the best age for a child to start skiing.
Their bodies regulate heat differently. Kids move around, play, and sweat more than a standing adult, so they need the same layering system (thermal + fleece + waterproof) but with more flexibility to add and remove layers as they change activities. Cotton next to their skin is an even bigger mistake with kids than adults because they move more and sweat faster.
Their eyes are more vulnerable. Eye pigmentation doesn't complete until around age 11, which makes quality eye protection even more important for kids than adults—cheap tinted plastic goggles won't do.
A helmet is non-negotiable and needs checking every season. Pretty much 100% of kids in ski lessons wear helmets, and for good reason: it needs to fit snug but not tight (too tight causes headaches, too loose and the goggles slip down and cover their nose). Since they grow fast, you need to check the fit every season—don't assume last year's helmet still works.
Mittens beat gloves for smaller kids. Getting five separate fingers into individual glove holes is hard for a small child, and besides, hands stay warmer together than apart. Once they're older and have more dexterity, regular gloves make sense again.
Skis shouldn't last multiple seasons. It's tempting to buy skis a bit longer so they "last one more year," but skis that are too long make it harder to do exactly what the child needs at the start: easy control and turning. The practical rule is the ski should reach about eye height, no more.
Make sure they have a snack and water. Kids burn a lot of energy in the snow—between the cold and the effort of staying upright all the time at first. A snack bar or dried fruit and water on hand prevent energy crashes that are easily mistaken for "they don't like skiing" when it's really just tiredness or hunger.
A small detail that helps a lot: put a label with their name and a contact number inside the helmet or jacket. When a group of kids is dressed alike, that detail makes it much easier to locate them if they wander off for a moment.
