Which board type to choose as a beginner, how to work out your size from your weight, why a soft flex is easier to ride, and the most common mistakes when buying your first snowboard.
Buying your first snowboard is one of those moments that makes this sport special. You're no longer someone who just tries it occasionally, you want to keep learning and enjoying the snow more and more.
It's also easy to feel lost. You start looking things up and terms like camber, rocker, flex, shape or setback start popping up, and it can feel like you need a degree just to buy a board. The good news is that you don't: if you're starting out, you only need to understand a few concepts to choose well and, above all, avoid buying a model meant for riders far more advanced than you. If you're still in your first days, it's worth reading why snowboarding is harder than skiing at first.
There's no single type of snowboard. Each one is designed for a different riding style:
If you're still learning, the answer is simple: choose an all-mountain board. It's the most balanced option, the easiest to control, and the one that lets you keep progressing for several seasons without outgrowing it.
This is probably the most common question, and it's worth distinguishing between two situations here.
If you're renting a board for a single day, the quick rule of thumb most rental shops use (standing it up to somewhere between your chin and your nose) is still a reasonable shortcut, since there's no time to check weight charts for every customer.
But if you're buying your own board, it's worth going one step further: every manufacturer lists the weight range each length is built for, and that figure is more accurate than height alone, since two people of the same height can weigh very differently. Follow the manufacturer's weight charts whenever you can, rather than relying on height alone.
As a general guide: if you're between two sizes, a slightly shorter board will be easier to handle, while a longer one will give you more stability as you gain experience. For a first board, prioritise control over speed.
Flex is how stiff the board is, and you don't need to overthink the concept. What matters: a soft or medium flex board is much more forgiving while you're learning, it'll be easier to initiate turns, correct mistakes and build confidence. Very stiff boards perform better at high speed, but demand refined technique. For most beginners, a soft flex is the way to go.
It's easy to run into concepts that sound decisive: traditional camber, rocker, flat, hybrid camber. In your first years, these differences will matter far less than choosing the right board type and flex. Most current all-mountain boards use fairly balanced profiles that already make learning easier on their own. You'll have plenty of time to dig into this once you know which riding style you truly enjoy.
Even though the board takes centre stage, bindings and boots have just as much, if not more, influence on the experience. Ideally the whole setup should be balanced. If you choose a beginner-friendly board, pair it with mid-range bindings and comfortable boots that hold the foot well without being overly stiff. In snowboarding, boot comfort can make more of a difference than many other components combined. And for the rest of your gear (layers, helmet, goggles), see what to bring skiing.
There's no magic number, but if you're putting in several days each season and know you'll keep riding, it's probably time to get your own gear. If you're still only managing one trip a year, or you're figuring out whether this sport is for you, you're probably better off sticking with rentals: you can book your equipment rental online at the resort of your choice.
A middle ground many people overlook: a second-hand board in good condition can be a sensible way to own gear without a full investment, especially for that first board, which you're quite likely to swap out in a season or two once you know which style you prefer.
